Watch this space! Developing a music/education partnership

Dawn Bennett

Dawn (FLL2003, Lecturer, Curtin University of Technology, WA) is currently researching a PhD into the relevance of existing performance-based music education and training to the current music performance industry. She has lectured in music for Curtin University since 1997, in which time she has researched and developed curriculum pertaining to the education of musicians and music educators. Formerly a violist with several major orchestras, Dawn's creative research output includes recordings with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. D.Bennett@curtin.edu.au.

Dawn's article surfaces the pivotal role communities of practice can play in ensuring that education and industry groups plan, teach and assess in partnership. She suggests this approach can engage practitioners in dispersed leadership, facilitate mentoring and teacher development and maintain the relevance of Training Packages. The article clearly articulates the process of researching and establishing the Australian Music Network, a community of practice designed to facilitate the active management of change in the education and music sectors.

A welcome view on the rarely researched music education sector, Dawn's article is an outcome of her 2003 Flexible Learning Leader scholarship. For more information visit http://flexiblelearning.net.au/leaders/fl_leaders/fll03/dawn_bennett.htm
