M-learning in the C21st: benefits for learners
Simon Geddes
Simon Geddes is Flexible Delivery Design Project Manager with the Department of Defence – Army. His Flexible Learning Leader 2004 goal is to obtain the vocational experience and exposure (to augment academic studies) required to successfully implement an mLearning component for a training package for the Australian Army.
Simon's article moves on from the negative press surrounding the notion of mLearning to a new definition and a positive outlook on how mobile technology will improve teaching and learning opportunities. Simon explores the possibility of schooling as a ‘cognitive apprenticeship' and suggests that the age at which learners are ready to move from a pedagogical to androgogical approach needs to be reassessed. He also suggests that an increased emphasis on metacognitive and literacy skills is needed in order for learners to make full use of the potential of mLearning. The article includes some interesting models of current mLearning and three hypothetical examples of how mLearning might enrich work based learning in the future.
